Value Partners Limited's rise from the fringes of Hong Kong's asset management industry is a remarkable story. In a local asset management market dominated by international brand names, the company has overcome immense barriers to entry to transform itself from a start-up boutique into a regional investment management powerhouse in little over 10 years.
Incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, Value Partners Limited began developing its current asset management business in 1993. The company's first investment fund, the Value Partners Classic Fund, was launched with just US$5.6 million in assets under management and now forms part of a business with few billion US dollars in assets under management.
This strong business growth has been built upon an uncompromising and highly specialized approach to managing clients' wealth. By applying a strict value-based investment approach and focusing on under-followed, under-researched small cap stocks, Value Partners established itself as a true pioneer in the Asia-Pacific asset management industry.
Under the guidance of its incumbent Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer, Mr. Cheah Cheng Hye, the company's willingness to invest outside of the mainstream led to the creation of funds which gave investors their opportunities to profit from deeply mis-priced small cap stocks, particularly those benefiting from the secular growth of the Mainland Chinese economy.
Value Partners Limited was one of the first investment managers to launch an authorized fundˆ in Hong Kong offering exposure to China's "B" share market in the 1990s and also one of the first to be an active purchasers of "private chips" in Hong Kong, a term applied to private sector companies from the Chinese mainland listed in Hong Kong or overseas locations.
Over the years, the scope of business opportunities identified by the company's management has outgrown Value Partners itself. This has led to the establishment of new investment management companies, such as Value Partners Private Equity Limited and Sensible Asset Management Limited.
In 2006, these companies and Value Partners Limited underwent reorganization. Ownership of all three companies were transferred to a holding company, named Value Partners Group Limited, which was listed on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited in November 2007. The move has allowed the group of companies to progress to their next phase of business development.
